Jam Chart for Farmhouse (13 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
1997-11-16 Denver, CO 5:26 Debut features Page deploying the now familiar watery keyboard effects he would use for most of the '90s, while Trey briefly shows off his Hendrix-esque skills in a culminating trill.
1998-11-07 Chicago, IL 5:18 A graceful, powerful set closing version which features excellent Page piano action and soaring soloing from Trey.
1999-07-15 Holmdel, NJ 9:46 Great extended "Type I" version which demonstrates the song's potential as a straightforward jamming vehicle. Here, the jam moves beyond the typical Page/Trey interplay to a full-band swing with a relaxed beginning that builds in power to a soaring crescendo.
1999-09-28 Pelham, AL 6:52 The jam here starts out strongly and improves from there. "Rockstar" Trey is on display in this excellent version, taking advantage of multiple opportunities to add shredding color with his uniquely '99 style and tone.
2000-06-23 Atlanta, GA 7:07 A classic '00 version in every sense, this "Farmhouse" serves as a foil for the 9/28/99 version, and features a much more mellow, restrained yet interesting jam including some cool repetitive riffs from Trey near the conclusion.
2003-02-24 East Rutherford, NJ 6:19 This strong 2.0 version features great Fish and Trey teaming, some nice licks from Trey, and a cool fakeout ending of sorts. 2.0 doubters should give this surprising encore selection a spin to cleanse their senses.
2010-06-17 Hartford, CT 7:26 This version has an excellent jam segment most notable for the cohesive playing by all four band mates. The peaceful, wandering melody here creates a perfect soundtrack for a summer evening. The only drawback to this fine version is Trey's use of the pitch shifter, common throughout 2010, which can be grating if allowed to dominate one's listening experience.
2012-07-01 East Troy, WI 6:23 Very 3.0-styled jam with peaceful, swinging melodic leads. Everything is subdued and nuanced, and it's just as easy to hear each of the players' respective contributions as it is to hear the unified end result.
2012-08-31 Commerce City, CO 10:54 Both sections of this historic version from the "F-Y-F" show deserve your attention. "Farmhouse" proper has an excellent straightforward jam, including rocking play similar to the 2/24/03 version, and an extended sustained note from Trey akin to what one might hear in a "Slave" or "Hood" jam. The ambient outro jam begins with an introspective sentiment before morphing into techno-rock abstraction.
2013-08-02 San Francisco, CA 7:25 Arguably the finest straightforward version to date, this wonderful version is replete with all sorts of good stuff, including fantastic playing by Mike, great Page and Trey counterpoint, and a lush groove with a peaceful and upbeat sense.
2015-07-22 Bend, OR 6:20 Trey's tone and chording give this solid version a slightly edgy, more rock-oriented feel than the typical "ballad" type version. Apprearing mid 2nd set before an excellent "Simple,", it's not so much a "breather" song as a rocking downshift before revving up for what followed.
2016-06-29 Philadelphia, PA 6:41 A sea of trills and melodic waves evoking the ocean's ebb and flow. A harmonious jam where the means are the ends; the musical equivalent to taking a walk through the woods for the sake of walking through the woods.
2016-07-16 George, WA 5:47 Delicate, directed playing by Trey, including some lovely descending arpeggios provide solid grounding for a strong "Mike's Groove," start to finish.
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
The jam chart team has highlighted some versions with a yellow background; these are the versions the team believes to be especially improvisational, or otherwise notable.
A purple date indicates that you were in attendance.
