NO.thing but Fire from start to finish. An intense show that was relentless in playing and structure. Taste was extremely well executed. Carini was shredded. Love Me. Intense. Ride Captain Ride. Chicago classic rock at its finest. Fee was beautifully played. (it needed a megaphone, thou) paul & silas: We love this song in the windy city. Roggae was another well executed and well-lighted (thanks Chris!) tune. Water in the sky was the first set breather. Stash was wet. Cavern just to keep u bouncing threw the set-break.

Chalkdust was the rocker that it should be to open a set. Meat was pure funk before a Who-esq version of Rock n Roll > Down w/ disease was akin to the Red Hot Chili Peppers on steroids > Piper was where everyone was looking for a bowl > before melting into a velveta sea > and RUNNING out like an Antelope.

Overall? Naughty.

Rates as 4-out-of-5 stars for me. Taste is .Netted as a Noteworthy Jam, but I'd contend that the Stash and Chalk Dust Torture should be, as well. At the very least, the crowd is crunk to be hearing Phish, audible on the recording on phish.in'. I love the song choices in the first set, with a short-and-sweet Carini, Love Me, the rare Ride Captain Ride, and Paul and Silas among the highlights. The second set is where the jammier tunes are, for the most part--Stash in the first set is about 14 minutes long--and although Trey has an interesting effect working throughout this show, the "songier" parts of the show feel more rewarding to me. Jane's Addiction encore, it's just an above average-great show.

A fine but totally skip-able show from Fall '98. The opening Taste (as pointed out in the Jamming Chart entry) is quite tasty (sorry), with Trey hitting all his notes and the band coming out firing on all cylinders. Carini is strong, but short -- it wasn't till 3.0 that Carini was finally let loose. After a coupla bust-out covers, a Fee with a sweet harmonics-laden outro, another bust-out (Paul and Silas), a standard-but-nice Roggae, and a (fast) Water in the Sky, we get the first and only real exploration of the set in Stash. It's pretty much par for the course in this Stash, though there is some cool Fikus teasing (played the previous night) by Trey throughout. They close the set with Cavern, and while I'd generally say "Caverns gonna Cavern", Trey does use a pretty cool inverting effect throughout this one.

The second set starts out with just a standard CDT that doesn't explore too deeply, and with Meat to follow, I can imagine being a bit underwhelmed at this point. But Rock and Roll follows, and is a nice rendering of the tune (and the first time since its Halloween debut) -- though it's relatively short, it ends on a high note and opens up into the wobbly intro zone that usually leads to DWD or 2001. This time, they go for the former, and it's clear they're ready to do some damage in the 4th quarter. The DWD is relatively compact, but has some nice jamming within, and has the "this has all been wonderful" coda with DWD rage riff to close things down... or so we think. The typical finish to DWD gives way to a short interlude reminiscent of some of the stranger Wormtown-type jams heard on the European Summer Tour in 1997, before fading out completely, giving way to Piper. Piper is fine, and if this version were swapped into a 3.0 set, you would be none the wiser. Wading follows, and it seems to have a bit of extra emotion to it, before a standard-hot Antelope takes us into the final short break. Been Caught Stealing is a nice and well-played cover, and we've finished a fine but completely expendable show.

If you're only going to spend a half hour listening to this show, check out the Taste, the Fee outro, the Stash jam, and the DWD -> Jam (that's how I'd call it on the setlist). This show is probably a shade above 3-stars -- nothing terrible, but not many highlights relatively speaking.

this show is extremely enjoyable...**asideI>> having had the privilege of attending both shows, there is a strong similarity between this show's set II and that of the NoCarol show eleven days in the future**...i will say, however, that although i FINALLY got my Carini (which i had actually requested two nights prior via a mid-set hand-written letter that i personally put in the hands of the song's namesake--**asideII>> in said letter, i also pointed out that, on that 6th day of Nov, 1998, there were exactly 420 days left until the year 2000 [thanks ESPN!!] which, at the time and seemingly incorrectly, i assumed was the impetus for Makisupa leading-off the second frame**) and, although, the first set opened with a RAAAAGING Taste and was made up of a few well played rarities (only the 2nd Ride Cpt Ride since '92, the 1st Paul&Silas since Fall '97 and an ain't-seen-the-light-of-day-since-EuroWinter'97 Paul & Silas), i would have to give the next night the upper hand as the best show of the Fall o' '98 Chi-town run
