Phish.net Turns 24!

Our online community started 24 years ago this week, with the original PhishNet email list. It's evolved - through a Usenet newsgroup, various website incarnations, and more - and continues to grow and (hopefully) improve each day. Whether you're newly arrived, have been here from the start, or anything in between, we appreciate your interest, interactions, and support; and we look forward to many more years, many more shows, and many more friends. Huzzah!

jarpua Phish.net is only 1 year older than the World Wide Web itself.
Pretty interesting.

Natureswanderer Holy crap, phish.net has been around the exact same number of years I have been on this Earth. Awesome stuff.

scottocs Crazy man! All the Doviac Schvice's I have from 92-93 mention Phish.net. I don't believe I owned my first computer until 95-96ish.

MDosque That's great stuff. I followed setlists in the 90's and with gadiel.com and the Schvice, I was always in the loop! Well done everyone - it's a great community and I love being a part of it.

Choda Back in my college days the group was my favorite place for escape, reading Charlie's awesome Tweezer/YEM reviews and reading threads with ideas for weird band ideas like opening a show with a Tweezer Reprise (which got done on 10/21/95...the band does read the site.) happy bday net!

JINXANDPRICEANDLOUIS Cheers to phish.net. 24 years on the www is quite an accomplishment. How fantastic is this community, which is purely and lovingly, engrossed in transcendental music?!?!

Here's to another 24 years of phish.net!

GmG720 Congrats Phish.net, thanks for everything you do!
, comment by Pinhead_Larry
Pinhead_Larry Phish.net started in Winter of 1990!? That's crazy! By that point, Phish had only been a band for not quite 7 years. Plus, the preparation for the site may have taken place a few years prior, say '88-'89 or so. Wow. Just wow.

I wonder if there are any original members still lurking/posting...

Anyway, thanks for providing this great service Phish community!

Happy birthday, .net!

The OP, "lemuria", a/k/a Ellis Godard, a/k/a Executive Director of The Mockingbird Foundation was on the original mailing list pre- the www website (1994) and the discussion "board", the Usenet newsgroup rec.music.phish.

There's a more detailed timeline on this site at "site > just for fun > phishnet timeline" here

capt_mellow Congrats .netters! You've managed to continue on a wonderful adventure and kept a kind group of folks, the love we all seem to share with Phish at a quality level most groups could not.
Well done and thanks to all who've shared so much time, advice, music and support. Take a bow.

charitytowin We could read the week's worth of posts in about 25 minutes on Saturday afternoon and 104% of them were, "What are they singing in You Enjoy Myself? I think it's WASH FM Coolin' on a Sunday."

Great Times!

jmkrochester I remember in 1992 going to the "computer lab" because we didn't have our own back then, and subscribing to Phish-Request@fuggles.acc.Virginia.EDU or Phish-Request@uvaarpa.Virginia.EDU for the internet version and Phish@Virginia for the bitnet version. I would print the digest out on dot matrix paper and bring them back to my dorm room to read. I traded tickets that way. It was amazing. I actually have printouts still from then (that's how I knew those addresses). I'm still mad I didn't send Matt Laurence $14 to his Charleston, MA (or Lexington, MA once he moved) address for the original shirt. Anyone have an extra? My 22nd anniversary of my first show is this Friday 5.9. Saw them in North Tonawanda, NY (Buffalo) at the Riviera Theater. GA show and I rode the rail! It's been a fun ride.

malachai Congrats and thank you Phish.net! I still recall my first Phish.net visit back in 1996 using Netscape Navigator... Thoughts to a good old 25th anniversary t-shirt contest for next year? Count me in if you do!
