This show, and this run, just didn't have a ton of memorable moments for me. I get that the emphasis was probably more on friends and fun that any serious musical exploration, and maybe that's a good thing from time to time. It's just that the price tag seems pretty dang hefty for the amount of musical payout. Second set becomes jukebox phish (whoever coined this term really hit the nail on the head) and the encore shows the continuing mashup trend. I wonder if instead of trying to shoehorn in a mike's groove, tweezer, carini, and ghost into a second set, it might be a better idea to just play up to the tropical vibes and take it easy, play some mellower sets. We basically chomped our way through the whole stream in front of the tee vee- I can't blame anyone for treating this run like a mellow spring break. Safe travels, everybody.
Must be hard to enjoy a show when youre chomping infront of the tv the whole time... I'd respectfully disagree completely with you and say that each night had incredibly memorable moments. That SYSF>Mercury almost clocking in at an hour and a quality hour at that! The 2001 on N1 with the feels of a 97-98 cowfunk patience before hitting peaks, I always wanted it this way had a fantastic jam, well placed covers(WLTS and Spanish Moon), great bust outs (spocks/curtain w), oh and A MF YEM OPENER! Yeah maybe there were some flubs here and there but when youre pulling songs from the depths that are rarely played or rarely open a show and youre getting so carried away in how much fun your having, a couple of missed notes doesnt bring the show down that much. (and neither does a fall where you dont even miss a note). The amount of patience and improv exploration that the band did this weekend was top notch, not to mention most of the highlights are songs that have only debuted in the last two years. I hope they release the SBD of the sound check too cause that jam they did before plasma was amazing too. The band is in an amazing place and theres a lot to look forward to this summer. Great review FunkyC, I will say when Say it to me S.A.N.D.T.O.E.S hit and the whole crowd went wild, it re-emphasized how great the new kasvot material is and how well it fits into the show. What a set closer! I'll be back to Mexico for sure if they do it in a few years from now!
