OSIRIS MEDIA ANNOUNCES UNDERMINE, A NEW PHISH PODCAST

We wanted to share the news that on February 3, 2021, Osiris Media will launch Undermine, which combines Under the Scales, Helping Friendly Podcast and Beyond the Pond into a new weekly show. Undermine will excavate the deep history of the band through interviews, in-depth analysis of the band’s music, and looks at broader musical themes and influences. You can listen to the Undermine announcement episode from Under the Scales here.

Undermine will take a narrative approach to this podcast, taking listeners on a journey through the first decade of Phish’s existence. Tom Marshall will serve as the narrator, but all three podcast teams will provide interviews, analysis, context, and more.

Season One will focus on “The Early Years,” Phish’s foundational period of the 1980s. This season will cover the band’s early influences and songwriting, as well as the developing fan culture, the biggest concerts played in that decade, early festival-like shows, and initial travels outside of Vermont to spread the music. In addition, we’ll focus on what was happening in both popular and counter-culture music, and how politics and culture of the 1980s laid the foundation for a band like Phish to grow.

Subscribers to Under the Scales will automatically get the first episodes of Undermine in February. And back episodes of Under the Scales, Helping Friendly Podcast and Beyond the Pond will always be available. Listen to the Undermine episode of Under the Scales to learn more.

humalupa I don't know how to feel about this. One reason I have enjoyed Beyond the Pond is that they gave voice to people like me, in that I have little interest in listening to jambands other than Phish, and would rather use that bandwidth to continue exploring other genres. I kind of fear that being absorbed into a larger sandbox is going to diminish their ability to essentially put the rest of the stereotypical jam scene on mute, and focus on other music, which I think has been integral to their independence and the success of their podcast. I just don't see how the core premise of BTP remains intact from here, and that's kind of a bummer, as I don't know that any other podcasters out there are taking their approach. I suppose I'll pour one out while listening to I Can Feel The Heart Beating As One...

It makes perfect sense that UTS and HFP combined forces, but I wish BTP had survived this merger. I hope Undermine can still make room for year-end best-album lists and the like, because as we all know, Phish myopia must be fought.

TheNextBall I too hope that this keeps things separated, if under one umbrella. But, mergers are the norm now, no escaping that. Good for Tom and the others that their content was worthy of being continued and not dropped. In that, I commend them for stepping through another door.

Additionally, Osiris media might want to re-think their artwork and title shown above?!!. Do they know what the word Undermine actually means? Hint: It's not about a diver finding treasure by a shipwreck. Might be the exact opposite.
