MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 292

Welcome to the 292nd edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the third and second-hardest of September. The winner will receive an MP3 download code courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of all three mystery clips – these clips are connected by a theme, but the theme needn't be part of the correct answer. Each person gets one guess to start – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday. Good luck and boogie on!

Hint:

Answer: Congrats to our favorite Canadian teacher, @ChalkDustTeacher, on his third win. This week, after recognizing the Minneapolis Bowie, he used the hint to find two other "alternate universe" A Live One selections, Phish's classic first live album to be released on vinyl next month. That's right, the 11/26/94 "David Bowie," the 12/2/94 "It's Ice" outro, and the 11/2/94 "Possum" all come from shows featuring A Live One selections ("Slave," "Gumbo," and "Tweezer" respectively). If you thought this week's puzzle was hard, wait till you see MJM293! *scrambles to put together puzzle*

serpent_deflector Ugh, the first one's so easy. But I give up. One day, I'll win one of these after lurking for so long. I seem to know one of the multiple clips later in the month instead of the first of the month.

Either you're thinking of another jam, or I was wrong about folks not knowing that jam inside and out...

Don't give up yet, the hint is yet to come and may give you the push you need across the finish line... and if you truly do know jam #1, you might be able to piece a theme together to narrow the search on the other two. No one has ever won a multi-clip MJM without poking around a bit...

I definitely know that one

ChalkDustTeacher Yeah I knew the first one right away too. Don't know what the others are right away though.

Wow, I just saw that my full post didn't show. I sound like a jerk here, sorry. I went on to say it's my favorite version. And I have thought about things like common set openers or closers. Got nothing.

relax_inn I strongly feel that these are all YEMs, but i have no clue which ones haha

serpent_deflector Ok... I may have just thought of the theme. So I'm going to play around with this and maybe I can get it before the hint drops!
, comment by ChalkDustTeacher
ChalkDustTeacher I've chased a couple of ideas for themes but no luck yet. I'll be teaching when the hint drops so hopefully it is still unsolved when I get back!

serpent_deflector Ok I'm just going to throw a guess out there, sans the theme, in case I was close on that

What the heck! My posts aren't showing completely. Probably a good thing because I know the other two I was guessing were wrong. But after the hint, I know I'm on the right track with the theme.

Are you by any chance using an ampersand? Or a greater than or less than sign? If so, stop using those and your whole post will come through :) [these are known bugs that will get fixed eventually]

Also: click 'Preview' before you post to make sure the whole thing is coming through. If you are using Preview and you aren't using special characters, we may have another bug, but it'd be new to my knowledge.

Stash - 7/8/94

EDIT: Not really sure why I'm getting downvoted. Maybe my guesses are wrong, but whatever.

It may be the smileys I'm using then...? Idk. lol I'll be posting a guess soon. Still going through some of these other jams to figure out clips 2 & 3.

I do know at least the first one is incorrect but not sure why that would result in a downvote either. I'll even it out lol.

Knew you were coming with it. I'm listening to Possum now. I prefer this Bowie over Providence. I had the theme all day but I would have had to had the day off to find the other two. And I'm also kicking myself for not finishing my goal of listening to the entire fall tour. But Long Time/Foreplay getting played every three shows got a little old. Congrats!

Edit: I'm hoping that one of these days, the first MJM of the month will contain a clip from a jam I know right off that bat like I did with this Bowie. I've had it happen more often later in the month though and just can't piece together all the clips. But alas, I'm a noob. ;)

Nice work! I hadn't explicitly chosen those songs because they didn't appear on ALO, but thought of the theme as "songs from shows featuring tracks on ALO." How about that It's Ice outro?? I was pretty proud of that pull – as a single clipper, that one may have never been solved...

Perhaps not on It's Ice. I listened to the Bowie from this show (and even for a short time, thought the theme was Bowies from shows featuring tracks from ALO since there are three) but I mostly stuck to the noteworthy jams from each show. I know that's a mistake but I couldn't listen to every jam and had a lot of buffering issues.

Pretty cool theme - alternate universe ALO picks.

I agree about It's Ice. I certainly wouldn't have found it without the theme. It does have that Fall '94 sound, but it's from a relatively under the radar show, it's not mentioned on the jam chart and it sounds like a YEM intro but with no cymbals - it would have been evil as a single clip (but that's what it takes for you to win)!

Yesterday I thought briefly that the theme might be Orpheum Bowies! They played Bowie three times at three different venues called the Orpheum - two in 1994 and one in 1992. The 1992 version was obviously not correct though (Page's keys). Would have been a cool theme, but probably too easy.

I did too, last night. But I thought all of these sounded too much like 1994, one of the few years I feel like I know a little bit about. Then this morning, I read the show notes on 11/26, and noticed the part about the Slave from that show appearing on ALO and thought, "that has to be it since it's coming out on vinyl soon." Anyway, congratulations again. Great work to you and to @uctweezer for yet another tough MJM.
