MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 73

For the 73rd consecutive week, the Blog is proud to bring you another Mystery Jam. As usual, we will be playing for an MP3 download, courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. The rules haven't changed: you need to correctly identify the song and the date to win. Post your guess in the comments. One guess per person per day (with the second “day” starting after I post the hint). The hint will come on Tuesday and the answer will be posted on Wednesday. Good luck...

Tuesday Hint: No hint needed this week.

Wednesday Answer: It's the 7/30/97 "Bowie" -> "Cities" -> "Bowie," specifically the segue into "Cities." So bl002e is our winner for the second time in four weeks. The Blog will be back on Mon. with another Mystery Jam.

Brother Wow. I've heard of the Bowie> Cities> Bowie but I've never listened and...wow when I pushed play and that funk came out of my speakers I was a little shocked that was Phish. They get funky of course but wow that little clip blew me away!

Snboard for you buddy. I think it was a from the archives. Get the whole thing though. I've listened to disc one so many times.

Yep, summer '97 is as funky as Phish got. Even though the fall tour was probably better, it was a bit less funky and a bit more spacey than the summer.

Yeah, as a couple of commenters smartly point out repeatedly on these boards, Fall 97's great strength wasn't funk as such, it was the way funk intermingled with all the other amazing shit the band was doing. Deep ambient music, weird droning grooves, clever melodies, thick textures...the music is just so intense in comparison to the languor of summer.

Doktahgonzo As much as it pains me to say it, I would almost say that the blog would be best served avoiding '97 entirely in the future, given that so much of it can be so distinctive & it has been digested so thoroughly by many of us, that MJ's like this just don't have a prayer. Maybe some jams from the spring might work, but Summer/Fall? Fugitaboutit.

Blackeydsloth I need to relabel my J-card!!!
Simpson's Language> Segue into Bowie> Bowie> segue into Cities> Cities> Segue into Bowie> Bowie...
;)

Good job bl002e
